In 2011 the Hereid family kindly gave the chapter funds to create a memorial for Don, who was such a pillar to the Pioneer chapter. The chapter decided that it would create an annual conservationist of the year award to be given in Don’s name.
The Conservationist of the Year Award is intended for someone who shows a strong desire to live in harmony with the land. A person who isn’t afraid to do conservation work no matter the cost or what everyone else thought. Also, someone who showed they lived out their lives promoting the beliefs of the Pheasants Forever organization. In establishing this award it is the beliefs of the chapter to award such persons and make others aware that it is o.k. to dedicate one self to making the land a better place than you found it.
The 2022 Don Hereid Memorial Conservationist Award is being presented to Louie & Linda Hugh who has made it possible for others to have a place to hunt and enjoy the outdoors as much as he does. In 2015 he sold 98 acres to the Chickasaw County Conservation Board. In 2022 he enrolled 70 acres in Iowa Hunting Access Program. He has planted food plots, planted and managed tree planting, and mowed trails for easy access. He feels very fortunate to live in Iowa and enjoy all Iowa has to offer.
